Doug Williams Memorial 5000 Meter Run

The Essex Running Club is hosting the first annual Doug Williams Memorial 5000 Meter Run on Sunday, October 7, 2012 at 9:00 AM at the Montclair Art Museum course.

There are two races: a 5000 Meter race and a 1-Mile fun run.

The races celebrate the life of Douglas Williams who was tragically killed by a hit and run driver on October 9th 2011.

Doug Williams, a lifelong resident of Montclair and member of the Essex Running Club, was walking home on Upper Mountain Avenue after grabbing a bite, just blocks of reaching his home he was suddenly and violently struck by a passing vehicle which sped away.  Tragically, when Doug was found at the scene, he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

To date, the driver of that vehicle has never come forward, nor ever been found.

In that moment, we were robbed of a man known by all for his gentle soul, trademark laugh, and caring nature.

On October 7, 2012, on the first anniversary of his death, Doug’s family, friends, and runners alike will gather to honor his memory and recognize his enduring spirit.  Doug’s affinity for running and taking part in so many world -class marathons will be celebrated with a Memorial 5000 Meter Run on the Montclair Art Museum course.   Proceeds will benefit a Scholarship in his name at Montclair State University, School of Business, where he graduated in 1985.

Please join us in this celebration.

The 5K course is a USATF-NJ certified 3 turn route which follows South Mountain Avenue through the beautiful “Estate Section” of Montclair. The one mile course is an “out & back” route along South Mountain Ave.
