At the Races

Zombie 5k, Medford, NJ, June 8–Bev Salerno

Sue Palermo and I did the Zombie 5K on June 8 in Medford, NJ. It was a SCREAM (no pun intended). Runners attempt to finish 3.1 miles of trail and obstacles without being eaten by hoards of the walking dead. Being “eaten” means getting your three red ribbons (worn around the waist) pulled off by zombies.

The obstacles were the easy part — crawling through mud, falling into water, going through a maze, etc. The hard part was getting past the zombies. You can’t run this like a normal 5K. Around every bend is a swarm of zombies waiting for you. It’s almost impossible to get through them alive without a strategy. That was the fun part — working with the other runners to thwart the zombies. Runners will long remember Sue’s battle cry “Protect The Queen!” Anyway, Sue and I didn’t make it. I got eaten by mile 1.5. Sue’s brains were sucked out around mile 2. As newly dead people, we decided to help the “living” by acting as decoys. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn’t. We finished the race covered in mud, soaking wet, and still dead. For obvious reasons, this 5K is not timed. If you get a chance to do a Zombie 5K, you should definitely sign up. You can be a runner or a zombie. The zombies had as much fun as the runners (maybe more).
