Doug Williams Memorial Scholarship, Montclair High School

From Mick Close:

The Essex Running Club is very pleased to announce the winners of this year’s Doug Williams Memorial Scholarship –  Eliana Tyler and Henry Whipple. They both received a check for $500 at the Montclair High School Senior Awards Ceremony held on Thursday, June 5th. The scholarship is presented in memory of Doug Williams who was a graduate of Montclair High School and a beloved member of the Essex Running Club when he was killed by a hit and run driver on Upper Mountain Ave in October 2011. The awards were presented by Doug’s sister and club member, Rosemary Williams, and his brother, Michael Williams.
Recipients of this award are selected from the graduating class at Montclair High School based on the following criteria:
  • Outstanding in track and field/cross country
  • Academic excellence
  • Leadership and community service
  • Expected participation in track and field/cross country at college
Eliana has a GPA of 4.47, has been on the track and field/cross country teams for 4 years (3 years as team captain) and has many accomplishments including the 2014 state sectional champion in the 800 meters. She will be attending Vassar College in the fall and will be a member of the XC/Track and Field team.

Henry has a GPA of 4.39, has also been a team captain for 3 years and has many accomplishments in the 1 mile, 2 mile and 5000 meters. He will be attending Hamilton College in the fall and competing on the XC/Track and Field team. Some of you may also know Henry as the son of club member, Jane Whipple Ziegler, and he finished 2nd overall in last week’s Montclair 10K in 35:36.

They have both shown leadership qualities on their teams and also volunteered for the Montclair recreation track and field program teaching the fundamentals of running to 3rd – 8th graders.

Congratulations to both Eliana and Henry on this very well deserved award.
