At the Races

Garrett Mountain 4 Miler, Sept, 6, 2014–Martta Kelly

Since we had so much fun at the Garret Mountain 4 miler last year, we decided to run it again this year. An unwelcome guest named Humidity followed us there this year, however, making the experience a bit of a grueling one.  Still, we had fun, both of us medaled, and I won a Timex Ironman GPS running watch, an item I would never buy for myself so that was very cool.

We had a couple more Essex people join us this year, including Jackson Bangs, who placed 3rd overall, with a time of 24:51!

There was also a celebrity of sorts there, Jared Fogle, spokesperson for Subway, a huge sponsor, was there and Tom and I got to take our photo with him. Jared, for those who don’t know, lost 254 pounds a few years ago, and claimed that eating at Subway helped him reach his goal. And, of course, Subway provided sandwiches for all finishers.

Not sure why this race is not more popular, with only 167 people showing up. It’s for a good cause, too: Proceeds help benefit the Child Life Development program at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital in Paterson, which provides programs to relieve the stress and anxiety associated with inpatient hospitalization, outpatient ambulatory procedures, and treatments.

The 4-mile course consists of two loops around the mountain, starting off with a nice downhill to help you build momentum.  Then, just like life, it’s all ups and downs from there.  A great workout and Tom and I want to come back here to train when it’s a mite cooler.

Here is how we did:

  • Jackson Bangs—3rd overall, 1st AG: 24:51
  • Guido Weber—34:12
  • Oriana Tejada—36:21
  • Tom Kelly—2nd AG: 36:51
  • Martta Kelly—3rd AG, 38:39
